Living together before marriage, or choosing cohabitation without plans to marry, has become a subject of debate among couples and families.

While some people see marriage as an important commitment, others believe two people can build a stable life together without a wedding or marriage certificate.

Here are 10 reasons some people prefer living together without getting married.

1. They do not believe a wedding certificate proves love. Some couples feel that commitment is demonstrated through their actions rather than a legal document.

2. They want to test their compatibility. Living together reveals how partners handle chores, money, disagreements and everyday responsibilities.

3. They are afraid of divorce. People who have witnessed difficult divorces may worry about the emotional and financial consequences of ending a marriage.

4. They want to avoid wedding expenses. Some couples would rather use their savings to rent a home, buy property or start a business than organise a wedding.

5. They value their independence. They may want companionship without feeling bound by traditional expectations attached to marriage.

6. They have been disappointed by marriage before. Divorced people may be willing to enter another relationship but reluctant to marry again.

7. They disagree with traditional marriage expectations. Some people do not want their relationship to be shaped by pressure from relatives, religious institutions or society.

8. They are not ready for legal commitment. A couple may love each other and share a home while still having different views about marriage.

9. They want to keep their finances separate. Some people prefer to maintain greater financial independence instead of combining assets and obligations through marriage.

10. They believe a lasting partnership matters more than its label. They may judge their relationship by loyalty, mutual support and shared goals rather than marital status.

However, living together without marrying can have practical consequences, particularly when it comes to property ownership, inheritance, children and separation. Couples should understand their legal rights and agree on important matters instead of assuming that cohabitation provides the same protections as marriage.
