You Allow Miners Without Licence But Jail Wontumi — Maxwell Ofosu Fires Sammy Gyamfi

A member of the NPP Communications Team, Maxwell Ofosu, has questioned the logic behind recent statements attributed to Sammy Gyamfi about small-scale mining.

According to him, if Sammy Gyamfi is suggesting that miners can now operate before obtaining licences, then there is a big question to answer.

“If Sammy Gyamfi suggests that miners can now operate before obtaining licences, then why is Chairman Wontumi in jail?” Maxwell Ofosu asked.

He said the statement does not make sense. Chairman Wontumi, the Ashanti Regional Chairman of the NPP, has been facing legal issues over mining-related activities. Maxwell Ofosu argued that if the new rule is that people can mine without a licence, then Chairman Wontumi should not be in trouble.

According to him, the law must be applied fairly to everyone. You cannot punish one person for the same thing you are allowing others to do.

Maxwell Ofosu believes the comments from Sammy Gyamfi have created confusion in the mining sector. He said small-scale miners are now confused about whether they need a licence or not before they start work.

He is calling on Sammy Gyamfi and the government to come clear on the policy and to ensure that justice is fair.

Supporters of Sammy Gyamfi, however, say his statement was misunderstood and that he never said people should mine without licences.

For now, the debate continues, with many Ghanaians asking for clear rules on who can mine and when.
