Uhuru Kenyatta Admits Mistake Over 2022 Election, Sends Message to Mt Kenya Residents
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has said he harbours no ill will towards residents of the Mt Kenya region over their political choices in the 2022 General Election, when he supported the late Raila Odinga’s presidential bid.
According to a report shared by The Star, Kenya, Uhuru made the remarks while reflecting on the election and the political differences that emerged between him and some voters in his traditional political stronghold.
During the 2022 election campaign, Uhuru backed Raila, who was then the leader of the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), against William Ruto. Ruto eventually won the presidential election and was sworn in as Kenya’s fifth president.
Uhuru’s decision to support Raila differed from the political position taken by many voters in the Mt Kenya region, a key voting bloc that largely supported Ruto during the election.
The former president’s latest remarks suggest that he has accepted the political outcome and does not intend to hold a grudge against residents who made a different choice at the ballot.
The 2022 election marked a major turning point in Kenya’s politics. Ruto defeated Raila in a closely contested presidential race, with the results subsequently challenged in court. The Supreme Court upheld Ruto’s victory.
Uhuru had served as president for two terms between 2013 and 2022. During his final years in office, his relationship with Ruto deteriorated after the two leaders fell out politically. Uhuru later worked with Raila, his former political rival, in the campaign leading to the 2022 election.
The changing alliances created divisions among political leaders and their supporters, particularly in Mt Kenya, where Ruto enjoyed significant backing.
Uhuru’s comments come as political leaders continue to engage voters and consider their positions ahead of the 2027 General Election. His remarks may renew discussion about his influence in the region and his relationship with its residents.
