Tricycle Rider Sets Wife And Six Children Ablaze At Breman-Dunkwa

A tragic incident shocked residents of Breman-Dunkwa in Ghana’s Central Region after a 42-year-old tricycle rider, identified as Yaw Afriyie, popularly known as Batman, allegedly set his wife and six children on fire before taking his own life. The incident occurred in the early hours of November 1, 2025, and left the community mourning the loss of an entire family.

According to reports, the incident followed a domestic dispute between Afriyie and his wife. Preliminary information gathered by investigators suggested that the man allegedly started the fire in the room where his family was sleeping before locking the door from the outside, preventing the occupants from escaping.

The Ghana National Fire Service confirmed that its Dunkwa-On-Offin station received a distress call at 1:04 a.m. Firefighters were immediately dispatched and arrived at the scene at approximately 1:20 a.m. However, the bedroom was already engulfed in flames, and the family members could not be rescued.

The firefighters managed to contain the blaze by 1:32 a.m., preventing it from spreading to other parts of the building. Unfortunately, the seven occupants trapped inside had died before they could be saved. Their bodies were subsequently handed over to the police for further investigations and other necessary procedures.

After the incident, Afriyie was reportedly found hanging from a tree in a nearby bush. Police suspected that he had taken his own life following the alleged attack on his family.

Further reporting by the Daily Graphic indicated that the family had experienced a history of domestic abuse. According to sources cited by the newspaper, the couple had faced repeated disagreements, and the man had previously served a prison sentence for causing serious injuries to two of his children. The report also stated that attempts by relatives to resolve the family’s problems had failed.

The tragedy has raised renewed concerns about domestic violence and the devastating consequences of unresolved family conflicts. It has also highlighted the importance of taking threats of violence seriously and seeking help when relationships become dangerous.

Authorities continued investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths, while the incident left residents and relatives grieving an immense and painful loss.
