Today’s Headlines: Stop destroying democracy that made you president- Peter Obi blasts Tinubu; X-raying Obasanjo’s global verdict on Tinubu’s reforms

The Nigeria Democratic Congress, NDC, presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has lashed out at President Bola Tinubu, asking him to stop destroying the democracy that made him President.

Obi made this statement in a post on his verified X handle on Monday.

This is as he demanded the immediate release of a political mobiliser for the NDC, Rilwan Olawale, following his reported arrest at his residence in Lagos.

Obi condemned the arrest, describing it as an attack on democracy and opposition voices.

The 13th edition of the Financial Times Africa Summit brought together African and international leaders, policymakers, business executives, investors and other influential stakeholders to discuss the continent’s economic prospects, investment opportunities, political leadership and development challenges. This year’s high-profile gathering featured such eminent personalities as Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama; Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote; Kirsty McNeill, the UK minister for international development; Taiwo Oyedele, Nigeria’s minister of finance and coordinating minister of the economy, among other distinguished participants.

I also attended the event as a senior media professional, where, before a distinguished international audience, I witnessed former Nigerian President Olusegun Obasanjo lay bare Nigeria’s economic predicament under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. What struck me was not merely the bluntness of his remarks but also the agreement they attracted from many of the dignitaries present. Obasanjo had articulated what millions of Nigerians have been saying at home: the country is in distress, and the Tinubu administration has yet to convince them that its economic reforms are delivering meaningful relief.

The mutilated body of a motorcycle rider has been found along Longvel Road in Shendam Local Government Area of Plateau State, with his motorcycle reportedly stolen.

The killing, reported on Monday, bears similarities to previous attacks on motorcycle riders in other parts of the state and adds to a series of violent incidents involving farmers, travellers, vigilantes and traditional leaders in recent weeks.

The identity of the latest victim and the circumstances surrounding his death remained unclear as of Monday.

Henry Homsuk, a community resident, said residents woke up to the disturbing news.

Twenty contacts associated with Kenya’s first imported case of Bundibugyo virus disease have been released from quarantine after completing the mandatory 21-day monitoring period without developing symptoms.

The World Health Organisation’s Regional Office for Africa said this in a statement on Monday.

The contacts were reunited with their families after undergoing a final health assessment and receiving counselling on post-discharge precautions and follow-up where required.

“We ask communities to welcome them home warmly,” Kenya’s Director General for Health, Dr Patrick Amoth, said. “Having completed 21 days without symptoms, they pose no risk of infection to anyone.”
