Steve Echendu’s family announces burial plans for Nollywood actor

The family of Nollywood actor and filmmaker Steve Echendu has announced that he will be buried on November 28, in his hometown in Imo State.

The three-day funeral programme was released by his son, Kamsiyochkwu Echendu, as colleagues continue to pay tribute to the actor, who died at the age of 52.

According to the funeral arrangements, a wake will be held on November 27, followed by a lying in state and burial ceremony on November 28 at Umuokwara Umuohiri, Isiala Mbano, Imo State.

The family will hold a thanksgiving and outing service on November 29 to conclude the funeral activities.

Actress Clarion Chukwura was among those who shared the funeral arrangements on social media, remembering Echendu for his contributions to Nollywood during its formative years.

“This is hard. Indeed a painful exit. A major pillar in the early days of Nollywood, the most Professional, hardworking and respectful Production Manager i ever worked with in the foundational years of Nollywood. Rest in Peace, Steve,” she wrote.

Echendu’s death was announced on October 23, following a tribute by his colleague, Wisdom Nwankwo, who described him as one of the key figures in the early development of the Nigerian film industry.

Nwankwo recalled Echendu’s association with OJs Production, where he was known for his work during the industry’s formative years.

Echendu worked as an actor, producer and director. His film credits include Knockout Blessing (2018), Fury (2019) and Infant at Heart (2024).

His death came amid renewed mourning in Nollywood following the death of veteran actor Francis Duru, whose passing was announced around the same period.

Although reports said Echendu had been battling an undisclosed illness before his death, his family has not publicly disclosed further details about the circumstances of his passing.
