SSA Reportedly Planted Insiders In EFF To Spy On And Win Members Back To The ANC
Allegations that South Africa’s State Security Agency (SSA) placed informants within the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) to monitor the party and persuade some members to return to the African National Congress (ANC) have sparked concerns about possible political interference by state intelligence structures.
According to the claims, individuals were allegedly positioned within the EFF to gather confidential information about its leadership, internal operations and political strategies. They were also reportedly tasked with identifying members who could be encouraged to leave the opposition party and rejoin the ANC.
However, the allegations have not been independently verified, and there is currently insufficient evidence to confirm whether such an operation took place.
South Africa’s intelligence services have faced previous controversies over allegations of political interference and the misuse of public funds. In September 2019, reports emerged that Crime Intelligence had allegedly spent approximately R4 million on informants tasked with gathering information about the EFF and the #FeesMustFall movement.
The SSA has also faced scrutiny over its alleged involvement in political factional battles during former president Jacob Zuma’s administration. A high-level review reportedly found that the agency had been used to advance particular political interests, raising concerns about its independence and accountability.
If the latest allegations are proven, they could intensify debate about the appropriate role of intelligence agencies in a democratic society. Using state resources to influence political membership or interfere in opposition parties could raise serious questions about fairness, accountability and democratic principles.
Nevertheless, historical controversies do not prove that the alleged EFF infiltration occurred. Further evidence, including supporting documents and official responses, is needed to establish the facts.
