South Africa’s economic turnaround is finally taking shape
South Africa is showing signs of an economic turnaround, with improving government finances, progress in electricity supply and logistics reforms offering hope after years of weak growth. However, the country still faces major challenges before it can deliver sustained economic growth and millions of new jobs.
A report published by Daily Investor on 26 October 2026 highlights how the government has made progress in stabilising its finances, with national debt expected to peak and begin declining. Economist Maire Antelme of Coronation said the improvement in public finances was significant although faster economic growth remained the missing piece of the recovery.
One of the most important developments is the improvement in South Africa’s fiscal position.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said in the October 2026 Medium Term Budget Policy Statement that government debt had stabilised at 78.4% of GDP in the 2025/26 financial year. Treasury expects the primary budget surplus to increase over the coming years, helping to reduce borrowing requirements and the cost of servicing debt.
A more stable fiscal position can help improve investor confidence and give the government greater room to invest in infrastructure and essential services.
Moody’s Ratings also described South Africa’s latest budget update as positive for its credit profile, while warning that weaker economic growth remained a concern.
Electricity supply has been one of the biggest constraints on South African businesses over the past decade.
Government says the country has made substantial progress in stabilising the electricity grid, while reforms are opening more opportunities for private investment in energy and transport infrastructure.
Logistics remains another priority. Improving railway capacity and port performance could help exporters move goods more efficiently, reduce business costs and make South African products more competitive internationally.
The government and business sector are also working together through the Government Business Partnership for Growth and Jobs, which aims to achieve economic growth above 3% and create one million additional jobs by 2030.
Despite the encouraging developments, South Africa’s economic recovery remains fragile.
Statistics South Africa reported that real GDP contracted by 0.2% in the second quarter of 2026, following six consecutive quarters of growth. Mining, manufacturing and trade were among the sectors weighing on economic activity. Investment also remained subdued.
Treasury forecasts growth of 1.2% for 2026, rising to 1.6% in 2027. These projections remain well below the growth rates needed to make a substantial difference to unemployment and living standards.
South Africa also needs stronger private-sector investment, better-performing municipalities, reliable water infrastructure and meaningful progress in fighting crime and corruption.
South Africa has several advantages that could support a stronger economy, including its mineral resources, established financial sector, agricultural industry and access to international markets.
The challenge is to turn these advantages into productive investment, competitive businesses and sustainable employment.
Improving government finances is an important step, but it will not automatically create jobs or lift household incomes. That requires faster economic growth, effective implementation of reforms and a business environment that encourages companies to expand.
South Africa may be moving in the right direction, but the real test will be whether these improvements translate into better opportunities for ordinary citizens.
The bottom line South Africa has reasons to be cautiously optimistic. Better fiscal stability and progress in electricity and logistics reforms could lay the foundations for a stronger economy. But the country will only complete its turnaround when faster growth creates more jobs, raises incomes and improves living standards across the population.
