In a statement, ET Rapid Response said it received a panic alarm from a small shop on Andrew Zondo Road at 09:06 and that information was relayed on the CCPO network.

The first responding officer arrived at the scene within three minutes despite traffic restrictions on the roads as a result of the Sapphire Coast Marathon, which was taking place that morning. The officer arrived while the robbery was still in progress.

“He got into a scuffle with one of the suspects, who managed to break free and flee. After a foot chase, the officer apprehended the suspect. With assistance from nearby race officials and the CCPO, the suspect was subdued,” read the statement.

The other suspected robbers evaded arrest because of the diversion caused by the marathon.

A knife and money taken during the robbery were recovered from the apprehended suspect. A case of armed robbery was opened at the Amanzimtoti police station, and the suspect was arrested.
