Rehabilitation begins on McCarthy-Mallam road
Rehabilitation works have commenced on the McCarthy-Mallam Junction section of the Accra-Cape Coast Highway following persistent concerns over potholes, worsening road conditions and heavy traffic congestion.
Citi News reported that ongoing construction activities on the stretch on Sunday, October 25, raising hopes that the works could ease the difficulties faced by motorists who frequently experience lengthy delays along the route.
The development follows growing calls for immediate intervention to repair damaged portions of the highway, which have contributed to traffic disruptions and made journeys between Kasoa and Accra increasingly challenging.
On October 19, 2026, the Member of Parliament for Weija-Gbawe, Jerry Ahmed Shaib, appealed to the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, to facilitate urgent repairs to the Weija Junction-to-Mallam stretch.
In his petition, Mr Shaib highlighted the severity of the situation, noting that a journey that would typically take about three minutes could extend beyond two hours due to extensive potholes and the deteriorated road surface.
He urged the Ghana Highway Authority and other relevant agencies to assess the affected section and carry out immediate repairs to restore smoother traffic movement and reduce the burden on commuters.
The Accra-Cape Coast Highway serves as a major transport corridor for residents and motorists travelling between Kasoa, Winneba, Weija-Gbawe and several parts of Accra, including Kaneshie, Odorkor and Dansoman.
The deteriorating condition of the road has also raised road safety concerns, with motorists forced to navigate around potholes and damaged sections.
Such conditions can increase the risk of accidents and contribute to higher vehicle maintenance costs, particularly damage to tyres and suspension systems.
Previous reports have also drawn attention to flooding and inadequate drainage along parts of the Kasoa-Mallam corridor.
The SCC-Old Barrier stretch, in particular, has experienced problems with wastewater flowing onto the road, contributing to surface deterioration and traffic congestion.
