R34m to be Spent on Deploying 510 Solders to KwaZulu-Natal

President Cyril Ramaphosa has authorised the deployment of 510 South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members to KwaZulu-Natal to assist police with maintaining law and order amid protests targeting undocumented foreign nationals.

The deployment is scheduled to remain in place until 30 November 2026, with the operation expected to cost the government approximately R34 million.

The soldiers will support the South African Police Service (SAPS) as authorities respond to demonstrations and tensions linked to concerns about undocumented immigration.

The decision comes amid heightened public attention surrounding immigration enforcement and protests in parts of the province. Such demonstrations have raised concerns about public safety, the protection of property and the potential for confrontations between protesters and affected communities.

The involvement of the military is intended to strengthen the security response and assist police in managing the situation. However, the deployment also places additional demands on public resources, with the estimated R34 million cost drawing attention to the financial implications of the operation.

Authorities are expected to coordinate the deployment with police operations to maintain stability and prevent possible unrest.

The situation highlights the challenges facing government as it seeks to address concerns about immigration while ensuring that law enforcement is conducted within the law and that the rights and safety of all people are protected.

The deployment has prompted questions about its necessity, cost and expected impact on security in KwaZulu-Natal.
