Northern Ashanti Mines Challenges Lease Termination As It Fights To Protect Konongo Mine

Northern Ashanti Mines Limited has turned to the High Court in Accra to prevent the government from taking control of its US$110 million mining investment at Konongo in the Ashanti Region, escalating a dispute over the termination of its mining lease.

The company has filed an application for an interlocutory injunction seeking to restrain state institutions and security agencies from entering, occupying or interfering with its mining operations while a separate legal challenge over the lease termination is pending.

Court documents indicate that the injunction application was filed on October 22, 2026, at the registry of the Commercial Division of the High Court. The motion is expected to be moved on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

The Minerals Commission, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, and the Attorney-General are named as defendants in the action.

Among the reliefs sought, Northern Ashanti Mines wants the court to prevent personnel of the Ghana Armed Forces, the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies from seizing or taking over the mine.

The company is also seeking protection for its staff, equipment, facilities, records and other property within the Konongo Mining Lease area in the Asante Akim District of the Ashanti Region.

Another aspect of the application seeks to stop the defendants from deploying security personnel to enforce the purported termination of the mining lease communicated in a Minerals Commission letter dated April 30, 2026.

The company is further asking the court to restrain the granting, transfer, reallocation or other disposal of mineral rights over the disputed area to third parties, whether Ghanaian or foreign.

It also wants any further steps to implement or enforce the April 30 letter halted until the final determination of its judicial review application.

In a related legal action filed on October 21, 2026, Northern Ashanti Mines challenged the termination of its mining lease through an application for judicial review.

That application seeks to have the decision declared unlawful and quashed by the court.

The proceedings place the legality of the lease termination and the future of the company’s Konongo operations before the judiciary.

The injunction request, if granted, could temporarily restrict actions affecting the mine while the substantive dispute is considered. However, the court’s decision on the application remains pending, and the allegations and legal claims have yet to be determined.
