Mensah Thompson Reveals Plan to Make Ghana the Financial Hub of West Africa

Mensah Thompson Esq. has expressed the ambition to position Ghana as the financial hub of West Africa, highlighting the importance of developing a strong financial sector capable of attracting investment and supporting economic growth across the subregion.

“We want to make Ghana the financial hub of West Africa,” Thompson stated.

His remarks highlight the need for Ghana to strengthen its financial institutions, expand its capital market and create an environment that attracts both domestic and international investors.

Becoming a regional financial hub would mean establishing Ghana as a preferred destination for financial services, investment activities, banking operations and capital mobilisation across West Africa.

Such a position could allow the country to play a greater role in connecting businesses, investors and financial institutions within the subregion and beyond.

Ghana already has several important components of a financial system, including commercial banks, insurance companies, investment firms and the Ghana Stock Exchange. However, achieving the ambition of becoming a leading regional financial centre would require further development of these institutions and improvements in the country’s investment environment.

One important area would be strengthening the capital market to enable businesses to raise long-term funding for expansion and development. Encouraging more companies to list on the Ghana Stock Exchange could increase investment opportunities and provide businesses with alternatives to conventional bank borrowing.

A deeper capital market could also attract institutional investors, including pension funds, insurance companies and international investment firms, thereby increasing the availability of funds for productive economic activities.

In addition, Ghana would need to maintain a stable macroeconomic environment to attract international investors. Predictable economic policies, effective regulation, sound public finances and confidence in the financial system would be important factors in determining whether foreign businesses choose to establish operations in the country.

The development of modern financial technology and digital payment systems could also support this ambition by improving access to financial services and making transactions more efficient.

Ghana’s location, established business environment and participation in regional economic initiatives could provide opportunities to strengthen its position within West Africa. However, the country would face competition from other regional economies seeking to attract financial institutions and investment.

To distinguish itself, Ghana would need to demonstrate that it can offer reliable financial services, efficient business processes, strong investor protection and a regulatory framework that supports innovation while maintaining financial stability.

Achieving this goal could bring several economic benefits. These may include increased foreign investment, job creation, expansion of financial services and greater opportunities for Ghanaian businesses to access international capital.

A stronger financial sector could also help mobilise domestic savings and direct funds towards sectors such as agriculture, manufacturing, infrastructure, housing and technology.

Nevertheless, becoming West Africa’s financial hub would require sustained policy implementation, investment in infrastructure, skilled professionals and continued efforts to build confidence among investors.
