Luc Eymael Reveals What He Told Young Africans Vice-Chairman After Manqoba Mngqithi’s Sacking
Former Young Africans coach Luc Eymael has spoken about the dismissal of Manqoba Mngqithi, revealing what he told the club’s vice-chairman following the decision to part ways with the South African tactician.
The Belgian coach reportedly expressed his views on the club’s decision, suggesting that Mngqithi’s departure deserved careful consideration given the work he had done during his short spell in Tanzania.
Mngqithi joined Young Africans in July 2026 after leaving South African football, bringing considerable experience from his time with Mamelodi Sundowns and Golden Arrows. His appointment raised expectations that he would help the Tanzanian giants maintain their domestic dominance and compete strongly in continental competitions.
During his brief tenure, Mngqithi achieved several positive results. He guided Young Africans to victory in the Tanzanian Community Shield against their traditional rivals, Simba SC, and helped the team secure qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage. These achievements demonstrated that his side remained competitive despite the challenges it faced.
However, pressure increased following a 2-1 defeat to Simba in the Kariakoo Derby on October 10. The situation became more difficult when Young Africans were held to a goalless draw by TRA United on October 24, leaving them five points behind their rivals in the league standings. The club subsequently announced the termination of Mngqithi’s contract.
Despite the disappointing league results, his overall record remained impressive. Young Africans played 13 matches under his leadership, recording 10 victories, two draws and one defeat. The statistics highlighted the contrast between his overall performance and the setbacks that ultimately contributed to his departure.
Eymael’s reported conversation with the club’s vice-chairman has drawn attention to the circumstances surrounding the decision. His perspective is particularly relevant because he previously managed Young Africans and understands the expectations and pressures associated with leading one of Tanzania’s biggest football clubs.
The dismissal also raises questions about coaching stability at Young Africans, who have experienced several managerial changes in recent seasons. Frequent changes can make it difficult for coaches to establish long-term plans, develop consistent playing styles and build teams capable of competing successfully across different competitions.
For Mngqithi, the immediate challenge will be determining his next career move after an unexpectedly short spell in Tanzania. Meanwhile, Young Africans must identify a replacement capable of closing the gap in the domestic title race while preparing the team for the CAF Champions League campaign.
