Kenyans React With Disbelief After Images of Ruto’s Newly Launched Road Emerge

President William Ruto has sparked mixed reactions among Kenyans after launching the 55-kilometre Twimiwa-Tseikuru-Usweni Road in Mwingi North Constituency, Kitui County, with some social media users questioning the condition of the road and the progress of infrastructure projects in the Ukambani region.

The President launched the KSh 5 billion road project on Monday, October 26, 2026, during his development tour of the region.

According to Ruto, the road is expected to connect farming and pastoralist communities in northern Kitui to markets, public services and economic opportunities.

However, images shared alongside the announcement triggered debate online, with several Kenyans questioning whether the road was ready for the kind of attention it received during the launch.

Some social media users questioned the timing of the launch, with others suggesting that the project had previously been announced.

One commenter, Isaac Gatundu, claimed he remembered the road being launched the previous year, shortly after Mashujaa Day celebrations.

Another user, TTNews Centre, questioned the distinction between launching a project and officially opening a completed facility for public use.

The user argued that a president should commission completed projects rather than launch developments that are yet to be fully realised.

Other Kenyans focused on the appearance of the road, with some expressing disbelief at its condition and questioning whether the region was receiving the infrastructure development it deserved.

Givan Daddise compared the landscape to the border between the United States and Mexico, while another commenter, Atandi Ogolla, asked, “Hapa bado ni Kenya?”

The reactions highlighted public concerns about road infrastructure, particularly in areas that have historically struggled with poor transport networks.

Despite the criticism, some social media users welcomed the project, arguing that improved infrastructure could transform communities and create opportunities for residents.

Jared Ochieng Ratego described infrastructure as an important foundation for economic growth and development.

Alex M. Kirimi also defended the initiative, suggesting that residents would eventually benefit from improved transport links and easier movement.

The contrasting reactions demonstrated the different expectations Kenyans have regarding government development projects, with some focusing on immediate results while others emphasise the potential long-term benefits.

The Twimiwa-Tseikuru-Usweni Road is intended to improve connectivity in an area where many residents depend on livestock keeping and farming for their livelihoods.

Better roads could reduce transport difficulties, make it easier for farmers to move their produce to markets and improve access to schools, health facilities and other essential services.

The KSh 5 billion project also forms part of Ruto’s broader infrastructure programme during his four-day development tour of Ukambani, covering Kitui, Machakos and Makueni counties.

The President has maintained that his administration is committed to addressing historical regional inequalities by extending infrastructure and public services to underserved communities.

Nevertheless, the online debate surrounding the road demonstrates that announcements alone may not satisfy all Kenyans, who increasingly want visible progress and completed projects.

As the government advances the initiative, residents will be watching to see how quickly construction progresses and whether the promised improvements translate into better transport and economic opportunities for communities in northern Kitui.
