Kalonzo Musyoka Visits Gachagua at Wamunyoro as Opposition Unity Faces Test Ahead of 2027

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka visited Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro residence on Monday, October 26, amid growing speculation about divisions within Kenya’s opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The meeting came days after Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna visited Gachagua at the same residence, sparking debate over the relationship between the former deputy president and Kalonzo. The visit by Sifuna and members of the Linda Mwananchi Movement fuelled claims that Gachagua could be considering supporting Sifuna’s political ambitions.

However, Kalonzo’s latest engagement appeared aimed at dismissing suggestions of a fallout between the two opposition leaders as different political formations pursue consultations ahead of the next election.

Speaking after the visit, Kalonzo described his relationship with Gachagua as one built on friendship and political cooperation since the latter’s impeachment in 2024.

“Since the impeachment of H.E. Rigathi Gachagua, he and I have stood together as friends and allies,” Kalonzo said, noting that Gachagua had previously visited his home in Muuna, Tseikuru, before he reciprocated with a visit to Wamunyoro.

The Wiper leader questioned why the meetings had generated controversy, presenting them as normal engagements between political allies.

On Sunday, October 25, Kalonzo had also declared that he was personally working to maintain relationships among opposition leaders as discussions continued over a possible united political front.

He said he had made it his responsibility to visit colleagues individually, arguing that Kenyans wanted a united opposition ahead of the 2027 polls.

Kalonzo further accused unnamed political actors of spreading propaganda to create confusion within opposition ranks, although he did not publicly provide evidence for the allegation.

Meanwhile, opposition leaders continue to pursue different political engagements as they explore possible cooperation.

Kalonzo has been involved in consultations alongside former National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi, while former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, People’s Liberation Party leader Martha Karua and People’s Party of Kenya leader Ndindi Nyoro have also participated in separate political engagements.

Gachagua has continued building the DCP’s political network, while Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi Movement has maintained contact with leaders from different political camps.

With the 2027 presidential contest approaching, the question of whether opposition leaders can agree on a common candidate remains central to their political negotiations.
