Just Days After Meeting Gachagua, Sifuna’s Team Clarifies Its Stand on Kalonzo and Matiang’i

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has defended his visit to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Wamunyoro residence, insisting that his engagement with the opposition leader does not mean he has abandoned former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i or Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka.

Natembeya clarified that opposition leaders remain united despite holding meetings with different political figures as they explore ways to strengthen their cooperation ahead of the 2027 General Election.

“Sisi kuenda Wamunyoro haimaanishi tunawapinga Matiang’i na Kalonzo. Sisi bado ni kitu kimoja chini ya ajenda moja,” Natembeya said, maintaining that the meeting should not be interpreted as a sign of political division within the opposition.

His remarks come amid growing consultations among opposition leaders seeking to develop a common strategy to challenge President William Ruto, who is expected to defend his seat in the next general election.

On Tuesday, October 20, Gachagua hosted Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, Natembeya and other political leaders at his Wamunyoro residence in Nyeri County.

The meeting brought together figures associated with Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi faction and Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP). Discussions reportedly centred on political cooperation, strengthening opposition unity and exploring the possibility of fielding a joint presidential candidate.

However, questions remain over who will lead the proposed opposition coalition and how the participating political parties will share responsibilities.

Matiang’i, associated with the Jubilee Party, and Kalonzo, leader of the Wiper Patriotic Front, remain influential figures whose participation could shape the opposition’s electoral prospects.

Natembeya’s clarification appears intended to ease concerns that his engagement with Gachagua could undermine existing political relationships.

As consultations continue, opposition leaders face the challenge of reconciling their individual ambitions and party interests while establishing a united front capable of mounting a serious challenge to Ruto in 2027.
