I Saw The Bus Tilting, Survivor Recounts Terrifying Moments Before Mtito Andei Crash That Killed 24

Survivors of the deadly Mtito Andei road accident have recounted the horrifying moments before a church bus collided with a lorry, killing 24 people and leaving several others injured.

The survivors, who are currently receiving treatment, described scenes of panic and confusion as the bus began swaying before eventually overturning in the Sunday, October 25, 2026, tragedy along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

Speaking during interviews on Monday, October 26, the survivors recalled how the journey suddenly turned into a nightmare, leaving passengers fighting for their lives.

One survivor said they noticed something unusual when the bus started moving from side to side moments before the crash.

“I saw the vehicle had started swaying,” the survivor recalled, describing the frightening moments that preceded the deadly collision.

Another survivor explained how the bus tilted to one side, briefly returned to its normal position, and then leaned again before overturning.

“Niona basi imetilt alafu after one second ikarudi alafu ikainama na ikaanguka,” the survivor narrated, explaining how quickly the situation deteriorated.

Beyond the physical injuries and trauma, the accident has left families devastated after losing their loved ones in the tragedy.

One survivor painfully disclosed that their sister had died in the crash, describing the deceased as an irreplaceable person in their life.

“My sister is dead. She was my everything,” the grieving survivor said, highlighting the immense emotional pain experienced by those who lost family members.

The accident occurred on Sunday morning at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, in Makueni County, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway.

By Sunday evening, the death toll had risen to 24, with several other passengers sustaining injuries and requiring medical attention.

As survivors continue recovering, their accounts have painted a heartbreaking picture of the final moments before the crash, while bereaved families struggle to come to terms with the devastating loss of their loved ones.

The tragedy has once again drawn attention to the dangers facing motorists and passengers travelling along one of Kenya’s major transport corridors.
