GTA CEO-deputy clash is corporate governance issue – Lom Nuku Ahlijah

Lawyer, lecturer and energy expert Lom Nuku Ahlijah has described the reported communication breakdown between Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA) Chief Executive Officer Maame Efua Houadjeto and her deputy, Abeiku Santana, as a corporate governance issue that requires broader scrutiny.

Speaking on Joy News, Ahlijah said the dispute should be examined in the context of the authority’s structure, which has three deputy chief executives, rather than focusing solely on the relationship between Abeiku and his boss.

“This is a corporate governance issue,” he said, explaining that the GTA was established by statute and operates with multiple deputies under its chief executive.

He questioned whether the reported difficulty in accessing the chief executive was limited to Abeiku or reflected a wider problem within the authority.

“We have to put this conversation in a proper context of whether indeed there is an issue generally or it is between this particular deputy and the boss,” he said.

Ahlijah asked whether the two other deputies had also complained about being unable to access the chief executive, or whether there were other communication challenges within the authority.

“Are those other deputies complaining that they can’t access their boss, or is there the boss can’t find them and so on? I don’t know,” he said.

During the discussion, a suggestion was raised that the chief executive might feel threatened by Abeiku’s political background. However, the excerpt provided does not contain Ahlijah’s full response to that point.
