Gachagua and Kalonzo Meet at Wamunyoro Ahead of Possible Opposition Alliance

Wiper Patriotic Front leader Kalonzo Musyoka has met former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua at his Wamunyoro rural home in Nyeri County as opposition leaders continue consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The meeting comes as leaders opposed to President William Ruto consider how to work together in the next election. One of the issues facing the opposition is whether to support a joint presidential candidate who can challenge Ruto when Kenyans go to the polls.

Kalonzo and Gachagua are among the political figures seeking to influence the direction of the opposition ahead of the contest. Their meeting could provide an opportunity to discuss cooperation, although the information available does not confirm whether they reached an agreement on a presidential candidate.

Kalonzo leads the Wiper Patriotic Front and has been involved in opposition politics for several years. He was the running mate of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the 2022 presidential election, when they faced Ruto and his running mate, Gachagua.

Gachagua served as deputy president from 2022 until his removal from office in October 2024 following an impeachment process. Since leaving office, he has remained an active political figure and has criticised the current administration.

His political influence, particularly in the Mt Kenya region, has made him an important figure in discussions about the opposition’s strategy for the next election. However, the extent of his support and how it may affect the 2027 contest will depend on political developments and voter decisions.

For Kalonzo, building cooperation among opposition leaders could be important as political parties prepare for the next election.
