Four South African Coaches Qualify for CAF Group Stages as Sundowns and Chiefs Exit

South African coaches are making their presence felt in African football, with Steve Barker, Rulani Mokwena, Manqoba Mngqithi and Eric Tinkler guiding their respective teams into the group stages of CAF competitions.

The four coaches have achieved an important milestone with their teams, demonstrating their ability to compete beyond South Africa’s borders. Their sides have reportedly scored a combined 28 goals and conceded just three across eight matches, highlighting their impressive performances during the qualifying rounds.

Steve Barker has guided Simba SC into the next stage, continuing his coaching journey outside South Africa. The former Stellenbosch FC coach will now turn his attention to the challenges ahead as Simba prepare to compete against other clubs in the group stages.

Rulani Mokwena has also secured qualification with Pyramids FC. The South African tactician has gained experience in African football, and his team’s progress provides another opportunity for him to compete for continental honours.

Meanwhile, Manqoba Mngqithi has guided Young Africans into the group stages despite his departure from the club. His qualification is particularly notable because he was dismissed from his coaching position despite his achievements with the Tanzanian side.

Mngqithi’s departure attracted attention because of his involvement in the club’s domestic and continental campaigns. His successful qualification effort adds another interesting chapter to his coaching career, even though he will not continue with the team in the next stage.

Eric Tinkler has also achieved qualification with Durban City, giving the South African club an opportunity to test itself against continental opposition.

For Tinkler, the achievement represents an important step for Durban City as the team looks to establish itself in African football. The group stages will present new challenges, but qualification gives the club an opportunity to compete at a higher level.

The success of these four coaches has also drawn attention because of the contrasting fortunes of two major South African clubs.

Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs have both been eliminated from their respective CAF competitions while working under foreign coaches. Sundowns suffered disappointment in the CAF Champions League, while Chiefs were unable to progress in the CAF Confederation Cup.

Their exits have raised questions among supporters about the performances of South African clubs in continental competitions, particularly when compared with the progress achieved by teams managed by South African coaches.

However, the different results do not necessarily establish that local coaches are better than their foreign counterparts. Football outcomes depend on several factors, including squad quality, tactical decisions, injuries and performances across individual matches.

Nevertheless, the qualification of Barker, Mokwena, Mngqithi and Tinkler represents a positive moment for South African coaching.

As the CAF group stages approach, all eyes will be on their teams to see whether they can maintain their form and challenge for continental silverware.

Their progress has given South African football supporters another reason to follow the upcoming African competitions with interest.
