FG Plans Treatment Centres in States as Contacts Rise to 53
According to a report by The Punch on Monday, October 26, 2026, the Federal Government is planning to identify and equip Ebola treatment centres in states with designated ports of entry, as the number of identified contacts linked to Nigeria’s confirmed case rises to 53.
The measures form part of a broader effort to strengthen the country’s preparedness against a possible spread of the disease.
An Ebola situation report obtained on Sunday revealed that the government is currently assessing isolation capacity at the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital.
Authorities are also planning an infection prevention and control assessment at Karu General Hospital as part of the containment strategy.
Beyond the federal capital, the government is working to establish referral mechanisms for suspected cases across the country.
Surveillance at ports of entry is also being strengthened, while healthcare facilities are being positioned to manage possible infections should the outbreak expand.
Health authorities say the rising number of contacts — now 53 — underscores the importance of early detection, isolation and monitoring to stop further transmission.
The development comes amid growing public concern over the confirmed case, with calls mounting for transparency and swift action from federal and state authorities.
Medical experts have consistently stressed that rapid contact tracing and well-equipped treatment centres remain the most effective tools in containing viral outbreaks of this nature.
The Federal Government has yet to announce the full list of states where the new treatment centres will be sited.
More details are expected as authorities continue to update the situation report in the coming days.
