Aden McCarthy Shines as Sabah Hold Qarabağ to Stay Top in Azerbaijan
Bafana Bafana defender Aden McCarthy continued his impressive run of form after helping Sabah FK secure a valuable 0-0 draw against Qarabağ FK in the Azerbaijani Misli Premier League on Sunday afternoon.
The South African centre-back delivered another solid defensive performance as Sabah maintained their position at the summit of the league standings following a fiercely contested encounter against one of their closest challengers.
The goalless draw on October 25, 2026, ensured that Sabah remained unbeaten in the league after eight matches, strengthening their early-season title ambitions.
Sabah have now collected 20 points from six victories and two draws, keeping them two points clear of their closest rivals, Neftçi and Qarabağ, who have 18 points each. The result represents another important step for a team determined to establish itself as a serious contender for domestic honours this season.
McCarthy’s contribution at the back was particularly significant given the quality of the opposition. Qarabağ are among Azerbaijan’s strongest teams and entered the contest hoping to close the gap on the league leaders.
However, Sabah’s defensive organisation proved difficult to break down, with McCarthy playing his part in ensuring that the home side preserved a clean sheet.
The 22-year-old’s continued development abroad is attracting growing attention from South African football supporters, particularly those following the progress of Bafana Bafana players competing outside the country.
The former Kaizer Chiefs youth product has enjoyed an encouraging spell in Azerbaijan, demonstrating composure and confidence while adapting to the demands of European football.
His latest performance also comes just days after he reached another important milestone in his career by scoring his first goal for Sabah in their UEFA Champions League encounter against German giants Borussia Dortmund.
Although Sabah suffered a narrow 2-1 defeat in that European fixture, McCarthy’s goal highlighted his growing contribution at both ends of the pitch.
His ability to combine defensive responsibility with an attacking threat from set-pieces could make him an increasingly valuable player for his club.
The defender’s recent displays have also strengthened his prospects at international level. He has reportedly been included in Pitso Mosimane’s preliminary Bafana Bafana squad ahead of South Africa’s upcoming 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches against Kenya next month.
A place in the final squad would provide McCarthy with another opportunity to establish himself within the national team setup.
For Sabah, attention will now turn to their next league assignment against Turan Tovuz on Friday, October 30, where they will aim to extend their unbeaten run.
With McCarthy continuing to impress, South African supporters will be watching closely to see whether the young defender can maintain his excellent form and turn his promising performances abroad into further international opportunities.
