Ebola: WHO says Nigeria has no active cases after patient’s evacuation to Switzerland
The World Health Organisation (WHO) has declared that Nigeria currently has no Ebola cases following the medical evacuation of an infected patient and her husband to Switzerland. WHO Regional Director for Africa, Dr Mohamed Janabi, disclosed this in a statement posted on his official X handle on Monday, confirming that the patient and her husband were evacuated earlier in the day.
Janabi said the patient and her husband were both Swiss citizens, adding that Nigeria would continue monitoring 52 contacts linked to the case, while Switzerland would assume responsibility for the patient’s continued care and the monitoring of her husband. According to him, the patient was clinically stable at the time of evacuation after Nigerian medical teams successfully managed the acute phase of her illness and stabilised her condition. He congratulated the Federal Government, health workers, clinicians, emergency responders and other partners involved in the response, describing the development as a remarkable achievement. Janabi said the successful management of the case demonstrated Africa’s expertise, resilience and leadership in public health, particularly when countries collaborate to address health emergencies. However, he stressed that the evacuation did not eliminate the need for continued vigilance, emphasising the importance of contact monitoring and other public health response measures. He explained that Nigeria would maintain close follow-up of the 52 contacts, while Switzerland would take responsibility for the patient’s continued medical management and monitor contact number 53, identified as her husband. The development marks a significant step in Nigeria’s response to the Ebola case, although the continued monitoring of exposed contacts remains essential to the public health response.
