Ebola: How To Prevent Transmission as NCDC Approves ₦100,000 Weekly Payment for Contacts

According to a report by the official Facebook page of The Punch Nigeria on Sunday, October 25, 2026, Nigeria’s confirmation of an imported Ebola case has raised fresh concerns about the country’s preparedness to prevent the virus from spreading.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention has approved a weekly payment of ₦100,000 for Ebola contacts placed in isolation.

The support is intended to cover feeding and family maintenance costs during the monitoring period.

The NCDC is currently monitoring 53 primary contacts linked to the confirmed case in the Federal Capital Territory.

The contacts reportedly include 44 health workers who may have been exposed while attending to the patient.

NCDC Director-General, Jide Idris, said health authorities were tracing and monitoring those who had contact with the confirmed case as part of measures to contain the situation.

Health experts have also urged medical workers to maintain a high index of suspicion, particularly when treating patients with unexplained fever.

“The first group of people to be exposed to this are the health workers. So, we need to protect them.

Provide them with personal protective equipment, and they too should be very cautious, particularly at this time.

Any fever of unknown origin should first be considered possible Ebola before you go on in treating the person.”

The experts stressed that early identification, proper isolation and rapid contact tracing remain essential in preventing further transmission.

Members of the public are advised to remain informed, avoid unnecessary panic and report suspected symptoms to health authorities.

Health workers should also use appropriate protective equipment when handling patients who may have been exposed to the virus.

Nigeria’s response will depend largely on effective surveillance, transparent communication and strict adherence to infection-prevention measures.
