Division Hits Opposition as Two Factions Emerge Ahead of 2027 Election

Kenya’s opposition is facing questions over its unity ahead of the 2027 General Election, following political engagements involving DCP Party Leader Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper boss Kalonzo Musyoka, and Linda Mwanachi leader Edwin Sifuna.

Attention is now turning to former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, who appear to be pursuing a different political path as opposition leaders position themselves ahead of the elections.

On Monday, October 26, Kalonzo met Gachagua at his Wamunyoro home in Nyeri County, where the two leaders agreed to rally behind a single presidential candidate to challenge President William Ruto.

The meeting brought together leaders from the Wiper Patriotic Front and the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), signalling fresh efforts to consolidate their political bases under one banner.

Kalonzo and Gachagua also agreed to reach out to other like-minded parties as they seek to strengthen the opposition’s WANTAM campaign, which aims to prevent Ruto from securing a second term.

The agreement placed renewed focus on the question of who will eventually carry the opposition’s presidential ticket in 2027 and whether competing political ambitions can be reconciled before the election.

Gachagua had earlier held talks with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, who has been associated with efforts to organise a political movement outside the established opposition structures.

The separate engagements have fuelled discussion about whether opposition leaders are working towards one broad coalition or building different political formations that could eventually compete for influence.

Meanwhile, Matiang’i and Nyoro have attracted attention as political figures whose next moves could influence the broader opposition landscape.

However, Nyoro has continued to be sidelined with DCP Party terming him as a mole, claim that he has dismissed.
