Nigerian singer Burna Boy presented the 2026 Socrates Award to Arsenal and England forward Bukayo Saka at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in London on Monday.
The presentation brought Nigerian representation to the centre of the prestigious football awards, with the Grammy-winning artiste taking part in the ceremony.
The Socrates Award recognises footballers and other figures who use their influence to support humanitarian causes and promote social change.
Saka received the honour for his charitable work supporting children in need, including funding 120 surgical operations for children in Nigeria through his partnership with German charity BigShoe.
The operations catered to children suffering from various health conditions, including hernias and brain tumours.
The initiative also reflects Saka’s connection to Nigeria, the country of his parents’ origin, and his efforts to improve access to healthcare for vulnerable children.
France Football magazine and the Peace and Sport organisation jointly present the award as part of the annual Ballon d’Or ceremony. It celebrates individuals in football whose humanitarian, educational and health initiatives demonstrate the sport’s impact beyond competition.
Established in 2022, the award is named after Brazilian football legend Socrates, who was known for his social activism and advocacy for democracy.
Senegalese forward Sadio Mane won the inaugural award in 2022 for his charitable projects in his home country, including support for healthcare and education in his village of Bambali.
Brazilian forward Vinicius Junior received the honour in 2023 for his efforts to improve children’s access to education and combat racism through his foundation.
Spain’s Jenni Hermoso won in 2024 in recognition of her social advocacy and role in drawing attention to abuse and discrimination in football.
The 2025 award went to the Xana Foundation, associated with Spanish coach Luis Enrique and his family, for its support for children living with serious illnesses and their families.
Saka’s recognition adds his name to the list of football figures honoured for using their platform to support humanitarian causes.
