Ashanti Regional Minister impressed with progress of 24-Hour Economy model markets
You know, it is one thing for government bodies to announce ambitious infrastructural projects aimed at decentralizing economic activity and modernizing local commerce, but it is an entirely different reality when those very projects begin to materialize on the ground, demonstrating tangible, measurable progress that directly impacts the daily livelihoods of market women, traders, and the broader regional economy.
The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, the Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, the various District Assemblies, and the broader national frameworks for local economic development, urban decongestion, and infrastructural expansion are institutionally mandated to foster sustainable and safe trading environments, ensure the equitable distribution of commercial resources across districts, and guarantee that the mechanisms of regional growth are not bottlenecked by the severe congestion of the regional capital. When a regional minister actively inspects and validates the progress of such transformative projects, it directly reinforces the core principles of administrative accountability, proactive governance, and the foundational need to ensure that the mechanisms of state-led development are executed with efficiency, transparency, and a deep commitment to community empowerment.
Modern Ghana reported on Monday, October 26, 2026, that the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has expressed profound satisfaction with the ongoing construction of the 24-Hour Economy Model Markets at Tebeso No. 2 and Aboabo in the Ashanti Region. During a comprehensive site visit accompanied by Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako, the Chief Director of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, Dr. Amoakohene noted that the Tebeso No. 2 project had impressively reached fifty-five percent completion, while work on the Aboabo market had advanced to approximately twenty percent. Commending the executing agencies, Eco Planners and Engineering Consult and NickSeth Construction Company Limited, for their remarkable pace and high quality of construction, the Minister emphasized that these model markets are strategically designed to provide vastly improved trading facilities, significantly reduce commercial congestion in Kumasi, and successfully decentralize economic activities to the various districts across the region. He further disclosed that this visionary initiative encompasses the construction of forty-two model markets across the Ashanti Region, a massive undertaking aimed at promoting local economic development, discouraging rural-urban migration among traders, and recently incorporating the Krofrom Market project into the same 24-Hour Economy framework.
Echoing the Minister’s optimism, Mr. Charles Appiah-Kubi, the District Chief Executive for Bosome Freho, stated that work on the Tebeso No. 2 market is progressing ahead of schedule, expressing strong confidence in the contractor’s ability to deliver the project well before the initial three-year timeframe, potentially by 2027. This sentiment was strongly supported by Dr. Kwame Asamoah, the lead consultant on the project, who expressed hope that the entire development could be completed within just two years. Dr. Asamoah highlighted that the market is designed to be a holistic community hub, providing additional critical facilities such as a school, a police post, and numerous shops to not only improve trading activities but also comprehensively support the development of the surrounding community. Acknowledging the collaborative nature of this achievement, the project team expressed deep appreciation to the traditional authorities for their pivotal role in releasing the land for the project. In response, Nana Appiah Niamah I, the Chief of Tebeso No. 2, warmly acknowledged the government’s development initiatives but wisely appealed for concurrent improvements in local infrastructure, particularly roads and schools, to fully complement and maximize the impact of the new market project.
You know, when such forward-looking, community-centered infrastructural developments are actively monitored and championed by regional leadership, it highlights the critical importance of ensuring that our local governance frameworks continuously prioritize holistic community development, so that the creation of modern trading hubs is seamlessly integrated with the necessary supporting social infrastructure, doesn’t it? As the region anticipates the completion of these vital markets and stakeholders reflect on the urgent need to maintain this momentum of decentralized growth, the public continues to monitor the situation, recognizing that robust local development frameworks and cooperative dialogue between the Regional Coordinating Council, traditional authorities, contractors, and the citizenry are vital pillars for ensuring fairness, economic prosperity, and order in Ghana’s developmental landscape.
