America Supported Biafra During Nigeria’s Civil War, Now It Claims Christian Genocide— Sheikh Gumi
According to a Facebook post on Monday, October 26, 2026, Islamic cleric Sheikh Ahmad Gumi criticised the United States over what he described as its negative attitude towards Nigerian muslims.
Gumi questioned whether the claims of christian genocide were driven by genuine religious concerns or foreign interests. He suggested that such claims could be used to pursue political and economic goals, including access to Nigeria’s mineral resources.
He wrote, “America supported biafra during Nigeria’s civil war, now it claims christian genocide.”
The cleric also referred to the Nigerian Civil War, arguing that Biafran leader Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu had raised concerns about Arab and muslim domination to support the call for secession. He noted that Nigeria’s then Head of State, General Yakubu Gowon, was a christian. Gumi argued that this history challenged attempts to present the conflict as a religious war between muslims and christians.
Gumi further cited the First Lady Oluremi Tinubu. He argued that her religious background challenged claims that Nigeria’s government was exclusively muslim or opposed to christians. However, he maintained that religious differences among political leaders alone could not determine whether persecution or violence existed in the country.
He called for the protection of human life and warned against using religious claims to advance political or economic interests. Gumi stressed that Nigeria’s security challenges should not be reduced to religious divisions. He said protecting the country’s sovereignty and promoting religious tolerance should remain national priorities.
