Wiliete SC Stun Sundowns With Champions League Exit

Mamelodi Sundowns have suffered a stunning early exit from the CAF Champions League after Wiliete SC eliminated the South African giants on the away-goals rule, bringing their continental title defence to an unexpected end before the group stage.

The result represents a major setback for Sundowns, who entered the competition with ambitions of continuing their success on the African stage. Their elimination at the preliminary-round stage has raised questions about what went wrong for a team accustomed to competing among the continent’s leading clubs.

Wiliete SC, meanwhile, can celebrate a significant achievement after overcoming one of Africa’s most recognised football sides. Progressing at the expense of the defending champions will give the Angolan club a major boost as they continue their campaign.

The away-goals rule proved decisive in determining the outcome of the tie. Under that rule, when teams were level on aggregate, the side that scored more goals away from home advanced. The result therefore went in Wiliete’s favour, leaving Sundowns unable to progress despite their status as reigning champions.

For Mamelodi Sundowns, the disappointment will be particularly difficult to accept given the expectations surrounding the club. The team has established itself as a regular contender in African competitions, making an exit before the group stage an unusual outcome for a side with such ambitions.

The defeat is also likely to prompt closer examination of Sundowns’ performances across the two legs, including their ability to manage crucial moments in knockout football. In continental competitions, even established teams can be punished when they fail to take their opportunities or control decisive situations.

Wiliete SC will now look ahead to the next stage with confidence after producing a result that will attract attention across African football. Their achievement demonstrates the unpredictable nature of knockout competitions, where reputation alone cannot guarantee qualification.

Sundowns must now turn their attention to their remaining objectives and assess how to respond to this setback. For Wiliete, however, eliminating the defending champions is a memorable milestone in their continental journey.
