“When People Tell You Bawumia Was VP and Head of EMT, Ask Them If Madam VP Today Is” – Kofi Benti

The Vice President of IMANI Africa has defended former Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia against criticism over his involvement in managing Ghana’s economy during the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration.

In a Facebook post published on Sunday, October 25, 2026, the policy analyst questioned the basis for holding Dr. Bawumia responsible for the country’s economic difficulties, particularly those associated with former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta.

He argued that Dr. Bawumia’s position as Vice President and head of the Economic Management Team (EMT) did not necessarily mean he had the final authority over every economic decision taken by the government.

To strengthen his argument, he asked critics to consider whether Ghana’s current Vice President was directly responsible for running the economy under the present administration.

The IMANI Africa executive maintained that the Vice President’s primary responsibility includes advising the President, who ultimately decides whether to accept or reject recommendations presented to him.

He explained that holding the office does not automatically grant its occupant the power to determine government policies independently, suggesting that accountability should reflect the actual authority exercised by individual officials.

His comments come amid continuing public debate about Dr. Bawumia’s role in the economic difficulties Ghana experienced under the previous NPP government.

Although Dr. Bawumia chaired the EMT, critics have questioned the team’s performance and the effectiveness of its economic strategies during the administration. Some believe his leadership position makes him answerable for the government’s economic outcomes.

Others argue that responsibility should also extend to officials who formulated and implemented specific policies, including Ken Ofori-Atta, who played a significant role in managing the country’s finances.

The latest remarks have introduced another perspective into the debate over political accountability, raising questions about the extent to which vice presidents should be held responsible for economic decisions made under their respective administrations.

The discussion surrounding Dr. Bawumia’s record continues to attract public attention.
