Total Number Of Confirmed Deaths & Injuries After Greasy Road Accident Along This Highway

At least 22 people died and 16 others sustained injuries on Sunday morning following a head-on collision involving a church bus and a lorry along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway near Mtito Andei.

​The crash occurred around 7:00 AM at the Kanga area in Kibwezi East Sub-County.

The passenger bus, belonging to The Power of the Word Church International, was traveling toward Mombasa carrying mourners returning from a burial ceremony when it collided with an oncoming lorry.

Initial police reports indicate that 20 victims died at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries while undergoing emergency medical care.

​Emergency responders transported 16 survivors to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for treatment.

Preliminary investigations suggest improper overtaking by the bus driver may have caused the fatal crash, though traffic officers and the National Transport and Safety Authority are continuing their formal inquiry.

Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Jr expressed condolences to the affected families, while former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua called on road users and transport authorities to enforce stricter safety compliance to curb highway fatalities.
