Today’s Headlines: Bishop Rallies Northern Christians for Tinubu; Police Rescue Kidnap Victim in Oyo

Bishop John Praise Daniel, General Overseer of Dominion Chapel International, urged Christians across northern Nigeria to unite across denominational, ethnic and political differences to support President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 re-election bid. Speaking at the commissioning of the national secretariat of Arewa Christians for Tinubu (ACT-2027) in Abuja, he called on members to mobilise support across villages, local government areas and wards, citing Christian appointments in the administration as part of his reasons for backing Tinubu.

The group’s Convener and National Coordinator, Ambassador Ayuba Ngbako, said ACT-2027 planned to mobilise supporters across the 19 northern states and the Federal Capital Territory, targeting five million votes for Tinubu. Daniel maintained that unity was essential to advancing Northern Christians’ political interests, expressing hope that Tinubu’s second term would create further opportunities for political engagement and discussions on issues affecting the community.

The Oyo State Police Command rescued 15-year-old Sumaila Muhammadu, who was kidnapped from the Onidundun area of Akinyele Local Government Area on October 18, during a security operation along the Awe–Iwo Road. The operation followed intelligence that suspected kidnappers were demanding ransom for the victim’s release, prompting police operatives and members of the Oyo Zone Vigilante Group of Nigeria to raid the suspects’ hideout.

During a gunfight, one suspected kidnapper was neutralised, while other gang members escaped with gunshot injuries. Police recovered an Android mobile phone and a cutlass, while efforts continued to arrest the fleeing suspects. The police urged residents to report suspicious persons with gunshot wounds and called on healthcare workers to notify authorities about anyone seeking treatment for such injuries.

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention approved a weekly stipend of ₦100,000 for each person placed in isolation or quarantine during efforts to contain an imported Ebola case in Abuja. Director-General Jide Idris said the emergency support would cover feeding, accommodation and family upkeep after contacts raised concerns about the financial burden of mandatory monitoring.

Nigeria had recorded one confirmed case, with 53 primary contacts identified for monitoring over the 21-day incubation period. Idris said one contact who reported feeling unwell tested negative, while surveillance, contact tracing and infection-control measures continued. He also urged state governments to prepare adequate resources for outbreak responses and called on Nigerians to cooperate with health officials and rely on verified information.

AFC Bournemouth thrashed Manchester United 3-0 at Old Trafford, intensifying pressure on manager Michael Carrick as the club’s winless run extended to eight games. Goals from Rayan, Marcus Tavernier and Evanilson secured the victory for Bournemouth, while United’s decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench throughout the match attracted attention following their recent poor performances.

The defeat left Manchester United 16th in the Premier League, just one point above the relegation zone, having won only twice in 12 matches across all competitions that season. Bournemouth, managed by Marco Rose, dominated much of the encounter, while United supporters directed their frustration at the club’s owners, the Glazer family, as chants calling for Carrick’s dismissal rang out during the match.
