Stop Ruining Him – Benson Mhlongo Sends Stern Warning to Kaizer Chiefs Coach Over Star Player

Benson Mhlongo Advises Da Cruz on How to Get the Best Out of Luke Baartman

Benson Mhlongo Sends Strong Message to Da Cruz Over Luke Baartman’s Role at Kaizer Chiefs

Former Cape Town Spurs assistant coach Benson Mhlongo has offered Kaizer Chiefs head coach Fernando Da Cruz valuable advice on how to get the best out of talented youngster Luke Baartman, insisting that the attacking player is not being used in the right way at Naturena.

Baartman arrived at Amakhosi with considerable expectations after impressing during his time at Cape Town Spurs, where his technical ability, intelligence and creativity made him one of the exciting young prospects in South African football. However, questions have emerged about whether Chiefs are maximising his strengths under Da Cruz.

Mhlongo, who previously worked with Baartman at Spurs, understands the youngster’s qualities and believes the coaching staff must identify the best way to utilise his abilities.

The former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder has previously spoken highly of Baartman’s football intelligence, highlighting his ability to make a difference during matches. He believes the youngster possesses the kind of natural talent that can help Chiefs unlock stubborn defences when given the right opportunities.

Baartman’s situation has become particularly interesting as Chiefs continue to search for consistency in their performances. The Soweto giants have struggled to meet supporters’ expectations, with their attacking play and ability to convert opportunities into victories coming under scrutiny.

The 2026/27 campaign has also presented an important development opportunity for Baartman, who has been working to establish himself as a regular contributor in the first team.

The 19-year-old has featured regularly in the league, and his willingness to learn from Da Cruz could prove important as he continues adjusting to the demands of playing for one of South Africa’s biggest clubs.

Nevertheless, Mhlongo’s assessment raises an important question: is Baartman being deployed in a position that allows him to influence matches effectively?

For a technically gifted attacker, positioning, freedom on the ball and the ability to operate between opposition defensive lines can make a significant difference. Giving Baartman opportunities to express his creativity could help Chiefs improve their attacking combinations and create more scoring opportunities.

Da Cruz now faces the challenge of finding the right balance between his tactical approach and the individual qualities of his players. With pressure mounting following Chiefs’ disappointing results, making better use of available attacking talent could become increasingly important.

For Baartman, the immediate priority will be to continue working hard, earning the coach’s trust and taking advantage of every opportunity that comes his way.

Mhlongo’s advice serves as a reminder that developing young talent requires more than simply selecting promising players. Finding the right role for them could be the difference between an exciting prospect and a consistent match-winner.

Chiefs supporters will hope Da Cruz can unlock Baartman’s potential and help the youngster become a decisive figure in the club’s push for success.
