Springbok loose forward Kwagga Smith reunites with Johan Ackermann in three-year Bulls deal
Ask AI 1minSpringbok loose forward Kwagga Smith, who missed the 2026 international season through injury, will bolster the Bulls’ back row after signing a three-year deal following his departure from Japan.
The Bulls have landed a major boost to their loose forward stocks, with double Rugby World Cup winner Kwagga Smith joining the Loftus-based side on a three-year deal.
They officially announced Smith as their latest acquisition on Sunday, with the veteran adding depth and proven experience to their back row ahead of a demanding United Rugby Championship (URC) and Champions Cup season.
Smith (33) recently left Japan, where he played for the Shizuoka Blue Revs. He tore his ACL and meniscus in May this year and has subsequently not played any rugby in 2026 as he continues his recovery. He missed the Springboks’ international season and Rugby’s Greatest Rivalry victory over the All Blacks.
However, the Bulls are ready to welcome him back to the playing field as early as December, which could bring him into contention to make his debut in one of the local URC derbies scheduled for then.
Smith is no stranger to teams coached by Johan Ackermann. He started his career in fifteens under the Bulls mentor when Ackermann was still at the Lions, and was a standout performer for the Ellis Park side under his guidance.
“I’m very excited to be joining,” Smith said.
He is currently progressing well with his recovery from the injury and is already jogging.
“I miss the rugby but I’m feeling good. My wife is pregnant, due in January, so the timing of joining the Bulls is perfect. Playing under Johan Ackermann (previously) was one of my best experiences. I’m looking forward to getting back by early next year.”
Ackermann said he was delighted to team up with Smith again, having coached him previously.
“As a youngster, he showed character and fight and integrity. He’s a team man who has grown into a stalwart, and it’s been a privilege to watch his career unfold and establish himself as one of the best back rows in world rugby. Wherever he goes, he makes a difference, and I look forward to him contributing both on and off the field.”
