The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) says allegations involving its CEO, Themba Matlou, should be reported through proper channels.
The calls follow media reports that Matlou hosted media briefings to discourage journalists from publishing any negative reports about him, dating back to December 2024.
The agency has justified the allegations as efforts to intensify public education, when there are changes that beneficiaries need to be aware of. SASSA says allegations published involving communications and stakeholder engagement tender overlooked the agency’s broader institutional and marketing strategy.
However, the agency says the tender spearheaded the migration from SASSA Gold Card when beneficiaries were transitioning to Postbank or any bank of their choice.
SASSA highlighted that the migration presented a public communication challenge, due to beneficiaries not being well informed about the transition.
It cited this as the reason for it to intensify public education efforts that include social media and online media.
SASSA says the communication and stakeholder engagement tender in question is to ensure beneficiaries understand their rights, obligations and access to social assistance.
