Ruto’s Close Ally and CS to Quit Cabinet Job to Chase a Political Seat in 2027

Labour Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua is reportedly setting his sights on the Machakos Senate seat ahead of the 2027 General Election, according to Kibwezi West MP Mwengi Mutuse.

Mutuse made the revelation on Saturday, October 24, while accompanying President William Ruto on his working tour of the Ukambani region.

Speaking at a stop in Machakos, he noted that Mutua was once his boss and that he had worked under him in the county. He then said he had heard whispers about his former boss’s political plans.

“I’ve heard rumours that he wants to become the Senator for Machakos,” Mutuse told the gathering. He then asked the crowd whether they would support Mutua if he came forward as a candidate, and the residents responded affirmatively.

Mutua was Machakos County’s first governor, elected in 2013 and re-elected in 2017. Term limits barred him from seeking a third term in 2022, as Kenyan governors, like the president, are restricted to two five-year terms.

The seat is currently held by Agnes Kavindu of the Wiper Party, led by Kalonzo Musyoka. Wiper commands significant support across much of the Ukambani region.

Mutua founded and leads Maendeleo Chap Chap, the party on whose ticket Mutuse won his seat. Mutuse is the party’s only MP in the 13th Parliament.

Following a National Governing Council meeting on August 12, the party announced plans to field candidates for every elective position, from MCA to governor, while pledging to back Ruto’s re-election bid.

It also launched a membership drive, planned a nationwide tour by Mutua to strengthen its structures, and invited former members who had defected to return by September 15, 2026.

Mutua has not publicly confirmed any intention to contest the Senate seat. It also remains unclear whether he plans to resign from the Cabinet, which is a legal requirement for public officers seeking elective office.
