Ruto Orders Nationwide Vehicle Inspections After Deadly Mtito Andei Crash Claims 23 Lives
President William Ruto has ordered thorough inspections of public service vehicles following a deadly road accident at Kanga near Mtito Andei along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway that claimed 23 lives.
The President also sent condolences to the families and friends of those who died in the Sunday, October 25, 2026, crash, describing the tragedy as a painful loss for the country.
In a statement shared on X, Ruto urged motorists, particularly public service vehicle drivers, to exercise caution and obey traffic regulations to prevent further loss of life on Kenyan roads.
He expressed sympathy for the bereaved families and wished those injured a speedy recovery.
The President directed the relevant authorities to carry out comprehensive inspections of public service vehicles to establish whether they meet the required safety standards.
The directive comes amid renewed concerns about road safety following another deadly collision along one of Kenya’s busiest highways.
The accident occurred at approximately 7am when a bus belonging to The Power of the Word Church International collided head-on with an oncoming lorry.
The bus was reportedly carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony and travelling towards Mombasa when the collision occurred.
Initial reports indicated that 20 people died at the scene, while others later succumbed to their injuries, raising the reported death toll to 23.
Sixteen injured passengers were taken to Makindu Sub-County Hospital and Mtito Andei Hospital for medical attention.
The identities of all the deceased had not been fully confirmed in the initial reports.
The National Transport and Safety Authority confirmed that its investigation team was working alongside the police to establish the circumstances surrounding the crash.
Preliminary findings suggested that improper overtaking may have contributed to the head-on collision, although investigators were yet to establish the full sequence of events.
The investigation is expected to determine how the collision occurred and whether violations of traffic regulations contributed to the tragedy.
The latest crash has renewed calls for stricter enforcement of road safety rules, with the President’s directive placing vehicle inspections at the centre of efforts to prevent similar tragedies.
