Ruto Defends Live Election Results Streaming, Warns Against “Propaganda” Over Election Laws

President William Ruto has defended the live streaming of election results, arguing that Kenyans have a right to access election information as it becomes available and warning against what he described as misleading narratives surrounding election laws.

Ruto questioned the motive behind efforts to create what he termed “another propaganda” campaign around claims that live streaming of election results has been banned.

According to the President, such claims risk confusing the public and creating unnecessary suspicion around the electoral process.

“They want to start creating another propaganda around the election laws that live streaming has been banned,” Ruto said, dismissing what he characterized as propaganda, useless information and fake news.

The President argued that there is little justification for preventing Kenyans from following the progress of an election through live broadcasts.

In his view, access to results is an important part of public participation and transparency, particularly during a period when millions of citizens are eager to know how their votes have shaped the country’s political direction.

“Why would anybody want to stop live streaming of results?” he asked, emphasizing that election results are a matter of public interest.

Ruto further maintained that Kenyans should not be forced to wait unnecessarily to know the outcome of an election.

He argued that the faster citizens receive credible information about the results, the better it is for the country.

“The sooner Kenyans get to know the results of an election, the better for our nation,” he said.

The remarks come as discussions over Kenya’s electoral laws, transparency and the management of election results continue to attract public attention.

Live transmission of election-related information has become an increasingly important issue, with citizens, political parties, media organizations and election observers closely watching how results are communicated.

Supporters of live results streaming generally view it as a tool for transparency, allowing the public to follow developments without relying solely on delayed announcements or unofficial reports.

At the same time, concerns over misinformation, premature declarations and the verification of results remain central to debates surrounding digital election coverage.

Ruto’s latest comments therefore place the question of live results streaming at the heart of the broader conversation about public access to electoral information.

As Kenya prepares for another politically significant electoral period, the debate is likely to intensify over how technology, transparency and electoral law should work together to ensure that Kenyans receive timely, accurate and credible information about their votes.
