NTSA Reveals Possible Cause of Mtito Andei Crash That Claimed 22 Lives
At least 22 people have lost their lives following a devastating road accident at Kanga, near Mtito Andei, along the busy Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, with the National Transport and Safety Authority now pointing to improper overtaking as a possible contributing factor.
The tragedy occurred on the morning of Sunday, October 25, when a public service vehicle and a commercial vehicle were involved in a head-on collision. Several other passengers were injured and taken to hospital for treatment.
In a statement issued following the crash, NTSA confirmed that its preliminary findings indicated that the two vehicles collided head-on. The authority said an overtaking manoeuvre may have contributed to the fatal incident.
However, NTSA stressed that investigations were still underway and that it would be premature to make a final determination on what exactly caused the crash.
The authority’s crash investigation team is working together with the police to reconstruct the events leading to the collision.
Investigators are expected to establish how the two vehicles approached each other and whether overtaking, speed or other circumstances played a role.
The crash has once again drawn attention to the dangers facing motorists and passengers along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, one of Kenya’s busiest transport corridors.
The road carries a constant flow of passenger vehicles, private cars and heavy commercial trucks travelling between Nairobi and the Coast.
Earlier reports indicated that the ill-fated bus was carrying passengers returning from a burial ceremony when disaster struck.
The death toll initially stood at 20 before rising to 22 after more victims succumbed to their injuries.
Other passengers were rushed to nearby medical facilities for emergency treatment.
The latest tragedy has also renewed concerns about road safety on the highway.
Just weeks earlier, another fatal crash along the same Nairobi-Mombasa route claimed 17 lives, highlighting the persistent risks faced by road users on the corridor.
As families come to terms with the devastating loss, NTSA has expressed condolences to the relatives and friends of those who died while wishing the injured passengers a speedy recovery.
For now, investigators continue to piece together the circumstances surrounding the crash.
The final findings are expected to provide a clearer picture of what happened and whether improper overtaking was indeed the critical factor behind one of the country’s latest major road tragedies.
