Ndlozi Says Foreign-Owned Spaza Shops Expose South Africans’ Lack of Organisation

Former Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) MP Mbuyiseni Ndlozi has argued that foreign nationals operating spaza shops have exposed a lack of organisation and cooperation among South African business owners.

Ndlozi pointed to the business strategies reportedly used by Pakistani shop owners, particularly their ability to purchase goods in bulk and offer competitive prices.

“The Pakistanis, you know what they do, they are organised, they buy in bulk, they are able to beat the prices,” Ndlozi said.

He argued that many South Africans focus too much on competing against one another rather than working collectively to strengthen their businesses and improve their competitiveness in the market.

According to Ndlozi, the success of some foreign-owned spaza shops highlights the importance of business organisation, collective purchasing power and effective pricing strategies.

He further suggested that removing foreign nationals from the sector would not automatically resolve the challenges facing South African shop owners, arguing that the underlying problem of poor organisation would remain.

“All they are saying to us, even if niyabaxosha kusasa [you chase them away tomorrow], they have exposed that you are not organised,” he said.

Ndlozi’s remarks have brought renewed attention to the debate surrounding foreign-owned spaza shops, local business participation and competition in South Africa’s informal retail sector.

His comments emphasise the need for local entrepreneurs to consider strategies such as cooperative buying, bulk purchasing and collaboration to improve their ability to compete on price and sustain their businesses.
