Man Living on Grave in Lang’ata Cemetery Reveals How He Survives Without a Home
A Nairobi well-wisher was left stunned after discovering a homeless man who has been living in Lang’ata Cemetery for four years, surviving on food and money provided by kind strangers.
The man, aged 37, was found resting on a tiled grave that he has turned into a makeshift home. His story emerged after Andanje, a well-wisher who visited the cemetery, shared a video of their encounter on TikTok.
In the footage, the man is seen lying on the grave, with a bedsheet spread across the surface and folded clothes serving as a pillow. Empty plastic bottles were scattered around his sleeping area, which he collects and sells to earn money for food.
Speaking to Andanje, the man explained that he had grown accustomed to sleeping among the dead and no longer feared spending his nights in the cemetery.
He said he relied on well-wishers who occasionally brought him food or gave him money to buy meals. According to him, the family of the person buried at the grave had not asked him to leave.
Among his few possessions were a container of drinking water and a single onion, which he kept for days when he had nothing else to eat.
Despite his difficult circumstances, the man maintained hope that his situation would eventually improve. He admitted that some nights he went to bed hungry but remained willing to accept help if someone offered him proper accommodation.
Moved by the encounter, Andanje returned to the cemetery the following day with food and promised to help the man find shelter and warm clothing.
“This is not a place to live. This is a place for the dead, not the living. We shall organise and get you a house,” Andanje told him.
The man, whose name was not disclosed, appeared receptive to the offer, although he seemed uncertain about whether the promise would become a reality.
His story has drawn attention to the difficult circumstances faced by homeless people in Nairobi, some of whom struggle to secure basic necessities such as food, clothing and safe accommodation.
Andanje’s promise has raised hope that the man could finally move away from the cemetery and begin rebuilding his life.
