Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru Names the Father of Opposition, Leaving Sifuna, Gachagua and Others Aside
Lawyer Ndegwa Njiru has identified Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka as a central figure in Kenya’s opposition as political discussions intensify ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Njiru made the remarks while discussing the opposition’s leadership and the challenge of bringing different political camps together. His assessment places Kalonzo at the centre of ongoing conversations about cooperation among leaders seeking an alternative to President William Ruto’s administration.
Kalonzo has remained a prominent opposition figure through his long political career and previous participation in opposition coalitions. He has also been involved in discussions about forming a united political front ahead of the next election.
Other leaders linked to the opposition include former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro. Their political positions and relationships with different parties continue to shape discussions about the opposition’s future direction.
Njiru’s description of Kalonzo as the opposition’s leading unifying figure reflects his own political assessment. It does not establish that all opposition leaders have agreed to recognise Kalonzo as their overall leader or presidential candidate.
The question of who should lead the opposition remains important as political parties consider possible coalitions, presidential nominations and strategies for the 2027 polls.
Kalonzo’s experience in previous opposition arrangements could feature in those discussions, but the final structure will depend on negotiations among the participating leaders and parties.
For now, Njiru’s remarks add to the debate over leadership within the opposition. Whether Kalonzo will receive a formal leadership role in a future coalition remains to be determined through the political process.
