Jonathan Moi Family Scandals: DNA Tests, Handcuffs & Billions Still Frozen 7 Years Later

Seven years after the death of Jonathan Kipkemboi Moi, the eldest son of former President Daniel arap Moi, his multi-billion-shilling estate remains trapped in one of the most bitter succession wars Kenya has seen.

Jonathan, a celebrated rally driver, died on 20 April 2019. Instead of a smooth handover, his family has been locked in continuous court battles involving four recognised households and 19 potential heirs.

The High Court ordered mandatory DNA tests for all 19 claimants after some family members insisted that only biological bloodline should inherit. This demand was linked to the late President Moi’s own will. The court, however, clarified that adopted children and dependants still have legal rights under Kenyan succession law.

The human cost of the dispute has been severe. One of Jonathan’s grandsons had to rely on public harambees for urgent cancer treatment while large sums of money remained frozen in court. The eldest son has also faced contempt of court charges and suffered a dramatic breakdown in court while in handcuffs.

Four co-administrators were appointed in 2023 to represent each house, but disagreements continue, especially over who truly belongs in the family. Political ambitions have further complicated matters, with some relatives eyeing elective positions and using the powerful Moi name.

What began as a private family matter has turned into a public spectacle of missing documents, secret marriages claims, endless court applications and frozen billions.

The fight for Jonathan Moi’s estate shows no sign of ending soon.
