John Methu Reveals DCP’s Next Move if Gachagua Is Not Picked as Opposition Flag Bearer

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has revealed what supporters of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua would do if he fails to secure the opposition’s presidential ticket ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Methu maintained that although Gachagua remains his preferred candidate, the opposition’s broader political objective should take priority over individual ambitions.

Speaking about the ongoing debate over who should challenge President William Ruto in the next election, the senator said supporters would stand behind whoever emerges as the opposition’s flag bearer.

“If, in the unlikely event, Rigathi Gachagua is not chosen as the opposition’s presidential candidate, we will still push whoever is chosen with all our energy,” Methu stated.

His remarks could provide an important indication of the position taken by some of Gachagua’s allies as opposition leaders continue discussing possible alliances and strategies ahead of the 2027 polls.

Gachagua, who leads the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has established himself as a prominent figure in the opposition following his departure from government. His supporters have continued to campaign for his political ambitions, with some viewing him as the strongest candidate to challenge Ruto.

However, the question of who should carry the opposition’s presidential flag remains unresolved. Several political leaders have expressed interest in the country’s top seat, raising questions about how competing ambitions will be managed.

Methu’s statement suggests that at least some supporters are prepared to accept a collective decision if consultations produce a different candidate.

The position could become significant if opposition leaders eventually agree to support a candidate other than Gachagua. Such a decision would require political goodwill and a willingness among supporters to prioritise a common objective.

As the 2027 elections approach, opposition unity is expected to remain a central issue in discussions about defeating Ruto.

For now, Methu has made his position clear: he prefers Gachagua but says he will support whoever the opposition chooses.
