GoldBod Breaks Silence on Claims Sammy Gyamfi Supports Illegal Mining
The Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) has dismissed claims that it would support illegal mining, arguing that such a position would conflict with its goal of obtaining certification from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).
GoldBod’s Head of Communications, Prince Kwame Minkah, explained that responsible sourcing was a fundamental requirement for the certification, which ensures that gold entering the market originates from legitimate sources and is produced in compliance with environmental and ethical standards.
He stressed that the Board’s commitment to meeting international requirements made it impossible for the institution to support mining activities that breach the law or contribute to environmental degradation.
“Nobody should fall under any delusion that the CEO of GoldBod, whose institution is aspiring for LBMA Certification, would endorse illegal mining, especially when the prerequisite for LBMA Certification is responsible sourcing,” he said.
Mr Minkah’s remarks follow public criticism of GoldBod Chief Executive Officer Sammy Gyamfi over comments regarding efforts to formalise the operations of unlicensed small-scale miners.
Mr Gyamfi later clarified his position, explaining that the objective was to integrate eligible operators into a regulated framework rather than encourage illegal mining.
Speaking on Channel One TV on Saturday, October 24, Mr Minkah said his comments were intended to clarify and reinforce the GoldBod chief executive’s position on bringing eligible small-scale miners into the legal mining sector.
