Defending Champions Sundowns Set To Fire Head Coach After CAF Disaster

Mamelodi Sundowns are reportedly considering a major coaching change following their unexpected elimination from the CAF Champions League at the hands of Angolan side Wiliete SC, with head coach Miguel Cardoso facing an uncertain future at the Pretoria-based club.

The disappointing result has raised questions about Cardoso’s position, particularly after Sundowns entered the competition with ambitions of defending the continental title they won last season. However, the club has not officially confirmed plans to dismiss the Portuguese coach, meaning speculation about his future remains unverified.

Sundowns’ elimination came after two disappointing encounters against Wiliete. The first leg in Angola ended in a goalless draw, leaving the South African champions needing a positive result at Loftus Versfeld to secure qualification for the group stages.

Tashreeq Matthews gave the Brazilians an early advantage in Friday night’s return fixture, raising hopes among home supporters that Sundowns would progress. However, experienced Angolan striker Mabululu struck shortly after the interval to restore parity and put Wiliete in a strong position.

Despite their efforts, Sundowns could not find the decisive goal, allowing the Angolan side to advance on the away-goals rule. The outcome represented a significant disappointment for a club accustomed to competing among Africa’s leading teams.

Amid growing uncertainty, Steve Komphela and Manqoba Mngqithi have reportedly emerged as potential interim replacements should the club decide to end Cardoso’s tenure.

Komphela, who currently serves within Sundowns’ technical setup, understands the club’s culture, structure and expectations. His familiarity with the squad could make him a convenient option if management seeks an immediate solution.

Mngqithi also possesses considerable experience at Sundowns, having previously played an important role in the technical team during the club’s period of domestic dominance. His subsequent experience with Tanzanian giants Young Africans has further strengthened his knowledge of African football.

Reports also indicate that Cardoso’s representatives could meet Sundowns management on Monday to discuss a possible contract termination and financial settlement. However, neither the meeting nor any agreement has been officially confirmed.

With domestic competitions still underway, Sundowns must carefully consider their next move. Any coaching decision could significantly influence the remainder of their campaign as supporters await an official statement regarding Cardoso’s future.
