Bypassed: How the Sifuna-Gachagua Pact Leaves Kalonzo Out in the Cold

Renowned political analyst Herman Manyora has issued a stern warning to Wiper Democratic Movement leader Kalonzo Musyoka, cautioning that the recent high-level consultations between ODM Secretary-General Edwin Sifuna and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua signal a dangerous collapse in confidence regarding Kalonzo’s 2027 presidential bid.

Commenting on the shifting dynamics within the opposition, Manyora argued that the sit-down between Sifuna and Gachagua two of the country’s most vocal and battle-hardened political figures is a deliberate message to the opposition’s traditional old guard.

According to the analyst, the emerging Sifuna-Gachagua axis demonstrates that key political operators are looking beyond Kalonzo to build a high-energy, combat-ready team capable of taking on President William Ruto’s electoral machine. By demonstrating a willingness to work together directly, Sifuna and Gachagua are effectively testing a new opposition engine that bypasses Wiper’s traditional claims to the flagship ticket.

“They are sending a clear signal that power lies where grassroots muscle and decisive leadership exist,” Manyora noted, emphasizing that voters and key opposition strategists are growing impatient with old-guard politics. “Kenyans want tough leaders who can defend the ballot. When Sifuna and Gachagua align, Kalonzo is left staring at a rapidly shrinking bargaining table.”

The development leaves Kalonzo in a delicate strategic dilemma. Having positioned himself as the natural heir to the anti-incumbent coalition, the Wiper leader now faces the reality of being outmaneuvered by a younger, more aggressive generation of political players who command significant voting blocs in Mt. Kenya and urban strongholds.

As political realignments accelerate, Manyora warns that unless Kalonzo radically reshapes his political strategy and asserts real authority over the opposition narrative, the Gachagua-Sifuna pact will reduce his 2027 ambitions to a secondary footnote.
