Bawumia Engages Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana on Plans to Boost Local Drug Production

New Patriotic Party (NPP) presidential candidate Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has held discussions with the leadership of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana (PSGH) as part of his ongoing consultations with key stakeholders on Ghana’s development priorities.

According to GhanaWeb on Saturday, October 24, 2026, Dr Bawumia visited the PSGH House in Accra, where he met with representatives of the society to discuss ways to strengthen Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry and increase local drug production.

The meeting formed part of his engagements with professionals and industry leaders to gather expert views on issues affecting the country and identify possible solutions to support national development.

Ghana’s pharmaceutical industry plays an important role in the healthcare sector by supplying medicines and other essential medical products to hospitals, pharmacies and healthcare facilities. Strengthening local production could help the country meet more of its domestic demand for medicines while creating opportunities for businesses and skilled professionals.

One of the key issues discussed during the engagement was how Ghana could position itself as a leading pharmaceutical production hub in West Africa. Achieving this ambition would require investment in manufacturing facilities, modern technology, research, workforce development and effective regulatory systems.

Expanding local pharmaceutical production could also create jobs, support local businesses and strengthen the country’s capacity to respond to public health emergencies. Greater domestic production may help reduce dependence on imported medicines, although the extent of these benefits would depend on production costs, quality standards, access to raw materials and the ability of local manufacturers to compete.

The Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana represents professionals working in the pharmaceutical sector and has a role in promoting professional standards and improving pharmaceutical practice. Its input could therefore provide useful perspectives on the opportunities and challenges facing the industry.

Dr Bawumia’s meeting with the society’s leadership reflects his continued engagement with professional groups as he gathers views on policies and development priorities. Such consultations allow stakeholders to raise concerns and share ideas that may inform discussions about the country’s economic and social development.

The engagement also brings attention to the importance of the pharmaceutical industry in Ghana’s broader development plans, particularly efforts to improve access to medicines and expand local manufacturing.
