ANC Women’s League Rejects Gwede Mantashe’s Apology, Demands Disciplinary Action
The African National Congress (ANC) has directed its national chairperson, Gwede Mantashe, to issue a public apology over controversial remarks he made during a campaign visit to North West. However, the party’s decision to consider the matter closed has not settled the dispute, with the ANC Women’s League continuing to demand an unconditional apology and disciplinary action.
The controversy erupted after a journalist questioned Mantashe about allegations that a municipal councillor had demanded sexual favours from women seeking employment. Responding to the question, Mantashe argued that the issue should not be linked to the ANC and used explicit language referring to female genitalia.
His remarks drew criticism, particularly from the ANC Women’s League, which described his choice of words as inappropriate and unacceptable. The organisation called on him to apologise publicly and face disciplinary action, insisting that senior party leaders should be held accountable for their statements.
Mantashe later indicated that he was apologising, but his response was accompanied by a remark that he did not know what he was supposed to apologise for. This qualification raised further concerns about whether he had fully acknowledged the criticism surrounding his comments.
ANC secretary-general Fikile Mbalula confirmed that the party’s National Working Committee had instructed Mantashe to apologise. According to Mbalula, the apology had been made, and the ANC considered the matter resolved.
However, the ANC Women’s League has maintained its position, arguing that the issue has not been adequately addressed. Its continued demand for an unconditional apology highlights a disagreement between the party’s leadership and its women’s structure over the appropriate response to the incident.
The controversy has also brought renewed attention to the original allegations against the municipal councillor, who was accused of demanding sexual favours in exchange for employment opportunities. These allegations remain distinct from the criticism directed at Mantashe over his response to the journalist’s question.
The disagreement comes as the ANC continues its campaign activities in North West, leaving the party facing questions about accountability and respect for women within its ranks.
While the party’s leadership maintains that Mantashe’s apology is sufficient, the Women’s League is calling for a clearer expression of remorse and further disciplinary measures.
It remains unclear whether the ANC will take additional action against its national chairperson. For now, the dispute centres on whether the apology meets the Women’s League’s demands and what consequences, if any, Mantashe may face over his controversial remarks.
